I don’t own knowledge, neither do you!

We all turn teachers at one point of time in our life. Some do it by chance other chose it as a career. In my case, I do it with pride every day. It’s a lot of fun and rewarding to throw light at the darker paths of life in order to educate, motivate, encourage and equip people to walk through and conquer unmapped heights. That’s the most beautiful part of the career I chose. And another best part is that I get to learn something new every day for passing it on to someone at some point of time in my career. Enticing isn’t it?

As people say, knowledge, the biggest wealth on earth, can neither be destroyed nor preserved, can only be transferred from one person to another which in the process is capable of transformation. The best of it being the more you give it, the more knowledgeable person you become. That’s all true when it comes to the natural laws governing this powerful thing.

Ever thought what would happen if this was not the case? What if somebody wanted to keep all the knowledge and source of knowledge for himself? Can you imagine someone denying you of your basic right to knowledge, giving some lame excuses?

I’m not exaggerating. There are a handful of people alive on this earth with such atrocious character or rather personality disorder. What turns suffocating for most of us, is what gives pleasure for these odd men. He would prefer having it all for himself and nothing for the others. What if one of them is your boss or your teacher? Devastating would this world become right? Can you even imagine yourself fighting for knowledge?

I’ve heard of people becoming selfish with money, love, food and almost every other thing in life. But this kind of people who are selfish with knowledge is rare of a form to find on earth. Unfortunately, on my wildest journey in search of knowledge, I found one! Someone who defies all the good rules governing teaching and learning by clogging all the channels of knowledge flow. I hope it is neither your boss nor you the boss itself.

  2. I think the reason for keeping knowledge to themselves is that if they share even a small part of the knowledge, the other person might get benefit from that. So, they keep with themselves rather than sharing for the greater good.

  3. Good one, seeing your post after a while. Indian medical systems like Ayurveda have suffered because of this 'Railway Compartment' mindset of not allowing others entry.

Why is my Reader not pulling in your blog posts?

    1. True. But why do they do it?
I've not made any modifications here. may be it's because I've not been able to post frequently.
      Thank you Satish Mutatkar.

  4. I too have seen such people in my life... I think, this is because of a 'bad competitive mind' - to have knowledge more than you/others. They might feel insecure - 'if others get to know about it then how would I be greater than them' :)

    Nice topic to ponder! :)

  5. A plenty of people becoming very much selfish for n number of things in life. Knowledge is something which is endless. You may gain love today lose it all tomorrow, but knowledge is something which you gain only every day every hour, every minute, every second. nicely written :)

  6. Some people just are so narrow minded and they have a tunnel vision. We should have a healthy atmosphere where you learn from each other and if we have more, pass it on...

    1. You just mentioned the ideal environment for best teaching learning experience. But in practice, we hardly reach close to it. Somewhere in the route we do encounter people like these. Thank you Saru.

  7. I have also encountered such people in my life. They are also the ones who ask you about each and everything as if they have never heard of it, they gain knowledge at the behest of us and wont ever pass that information on to others. Such selfish people do exist, a lot more than we can imagine. You are dead right, information needs to be imparted on to others and not suppress it within oneself for selfish needs. Such people will not come up in life.

  8. Don't people who are selfish with knowledge realise their knowledge is minuscule? Don't they know the joys of sharing whatever little they have? I pity them.

    1. Unfortunately they don't realize that. The worst part is most of them are not correctable too. May be its a manifestation of insecure life they lead. Thank you KayEm.

  9. Knowledge is of no use when it isn't shared, it dies the moment we die. But if we share, it spreads and lives forever!

  10. Good Post.

Happiness and Knowledge are the only two things that keep on increasing as we share it with large number of people. Those who do not want to share knowledge are also lacking in knowledge that they would do more good by sharing rather than freezing it in their brains.

Clogging of knowledge channels is not uncommon. I have run into such mandarins both in educational and work spheres.

True, they do exist everywhere. But just can't believe their prominence in the field of education. If that's what they want to do why did they take teaching at all as a career. Thank you usmashankar.

  12. i thnk yr post got sumthng to do with aaron swartz saga ...its sad wat happened nd i did spend sumtym thinking : "shud every bits of data be made free and available to all !!! den wat about patents !! ders so many scientist in every field who spend der whole life inventing discovering new things,,while people like me do facebook :D,,,y will dat scientist makes his invention knowledge free for people like me ,,offcourse he was d one who had made sacrifices , who had brunt d midnight oil ,,y shud he give his knowledge for free ? he can share his knowlegde wid ppl who r willing to pay him to sustain his research or his life ,,,!!!!" dat makes sense i guess ??
nd am not against sharing knowledge it must b shared and we must build communities where we can share knowledge..,,nd built d best of machines ,,but know;edge must b patented nd protected both for sustaining purpose nd for safety

    1. Aaron swartz saga is complete different story. This is basically concerned with the selfishness in knowledge and clogging the channels through which knowledge would naturally flow. This has nothing to do with patents or inventions and any intellectual properties for that matter.
But having brought up this topic, my take is that, knowledge, scientific research, Publications etc should all be open sourced. But the person behind the knowledge should always be credited. If it's not for sharing, why would some one even invent something?

  14. Good post, knowledge by its inherent nature exists because somebody or something transferred it to the next. If not shared it is as useless as gem lying in mine unexplored.

I don't know if you remember but i used to have a blog under the name "Audere Agere Auferre" and we were on each other's reading list.
I lost that blog, but i started a new one. I hope you can find some time to visit. It would be lovely if we could follow each other again. :)

  17. I think only those who are not confident about their knowledge and the ones feeling insecure for some reason will refrain from sharing knowledge. Being a teacher myself for a significant period I can say, knowledge sharing is a wonderful experience!!

  19. I fully agree with you. This is a very prevalent practice esp in corp offices. Some people do not want to part from their knowledge, they think the other person will replace them. That's unfair. People hold knowledge to create dependability & that's abhor-able!
